Insertion of Intraoral Implant
This leaflet is designed to help you understand your upcoming treatment and answer common questions. If anything is unclear, or if you would like further explanation, please ask your dentist or surgeon.
What is an Implant?
An implant is a small metal screw that is placed into the jawbone to act as a root for a
replacement tooth. Implants provide a stable base for a crown, bridge, or denture attachments.
What Does Implant Surgery Involve?
- The procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic, which is an injection to numb the area.
- Once numb, the gum is cut and gently pushed back to expose the jawbone.
- A small hole is drilled into the bone, and the implant is screwed into place.
- The gum is then stitched back over the implant. Most stitches dissolve on their own, but they can take a few weeks to disappear.
How Long Does the Operation Take?
- Placing a single implant usually takes about 30 minutes.
- If multiple implants are being placed, the procedure will take longer.
What Can I Expect After Surgery?
- Implant surgery is usually not very painful, but regular painkillers such as ibuprofen will be provided.
- Swelling is generally minimal.
Time Off Work
- It is recommended to take the rest of the day off.
- Depending on your job and how many implants were placed, you may need an additional day or so at home.
- If you had intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic, you cannot drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after sedation and 48 hours after general anaesthetic.
Care at Home
- Keep the surgical area as clean as possible for the first few weeks.
- If brushing is uncomfortable, gently rinse the area with a mouthwash or warm salt water (1 flat teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water), starting the day after surgery.
- Take the prescribed antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
Possible Complications
- Bleeding: Some minor bleeding is normal and usually stops quickly. If bleeding occurs at home, apply pressure with a rolled-up handkerchief or swab for 10 minutes.
- Infection: Rare, especially if antibiotics are taken as directed.
- Nerve injury:
- Implants in the lower jaw may be near nerves that supply sensation to your lower lip, chin, teeth, and tongue.
- Rarely, the nerves can be bruised, causing tingling, numbness, or altered taste.
- The risk depends on the implant site and surrounding bone. Your surgeon will discuss the risk with you before surgery.
