What is Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of Sri Lanka (COMSSL) is the national professional body representing Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) Surgeons in the country. OMF Surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry focusing on the surgical management of diseases, injuries, and deformities of the mouth, jaws, face, and related structures — integrating dental, medical, and surgical expertise to provide comprehensive patient care.

Scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dentoalveolar Surgery

  • Surgical extraction of impacted teeth
  • Pre-prosthetic surgery
  • Dental implantology

Trauma Surgery

  • Management of maxillofacial fractures (mandible, midface, orbital, zygomatic, craniofacial)
  • Soft tissue laceration repair
  • Secondary deformity correction following trauma

Pathology and Oncology

  • Diagnosis and surgical management of cysts and benign/malignant tumors of the jaws and oral cavity including head and neck cancers.
  • Oncologic resections with functional and esthetic reconstruction

Orthognathic and Craniofacial Surgery

  • Correction of dentofacial deformities to restore occlusion, mastication, speech, and facial balance
  • Surgical adjuncts in orthodontics
  • Distraction osteogenesis and craniofacial deformity correction

Cleft Lip, Palate, and Craniofacial Anomalies

  • Primary and secondary cleft surgery
  • Velopharyngeal dysfunction correction
  • Multidisciplinary craniofacial team participation

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Surgery

  • Arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, and open joint procedures
  • TMJ reconstruction (autogenous grafts and alloplastic prostheses)

Reconstructive and Microsurgery

  • Local and free flap reconstruction of maxillofacial defects
  • Microvascular surgery for continuity defects following tumor ablation or trauma

Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgery

  • Facial contouring (genioplasty, rhinoplasty, orbital and zygomatic surgery)
  • Soft tissue procedures (blepharoplasty, facelifts, lip augmentation)

Management of Facial Pain Conditions

  • Management of painful conditions related to oral cavity, structures of the face and Temporomandibular joint

Management of Oral Mucosal Diseases

  • Management of Oral Ulcers, potentially malignant conditions of the oral cavity

Management of Salivary Gland Diseases

  • Management of Salivary gland infections
  • Management of Dry mouth
  • Management of Salivary gland calculi and obstructions
